Join us for an evening of films by artists Ama Josephine Budge, Wanda Holopainen, Jumana Manna and Nina Sarnelle in solidarity with Palestine. During the event, we will screen five films:  Piilo, Lost Shark, The Law of Conservation of Urgency, Putting the Cooker on Low and Foragers. Participants are invited to pay what they can directly to one of the following organisations via donation links at the SOLU Space: Lajee Center, The PCRF and Medical Aid for Palestinians.

Piilo, a short film by Wanda Holopainen, explores the nuanced theme of navigating through diverse cultural and social settings, delving into the complex dynamics that impact the aspects of ourselves we choose to unveil. Lost Shark by Nina Sarnelle is a short film, listing recently extinct species using AI imagery generated from the species’ coloniser names to capture a frenetic state of searching. What is reflected in the dataset and what is lost? How do we know when a species is truly gone? Sarnelle’s second film The Law of Conservation of Urgency is a meditation on the unstated calculations (like proximity, death count, racism) that influence individuals’ responsiveness to the many interlocking crises escalating around the globe today. Putting the Cooker on Low by Ama Josephine Budge explores the daily rituals that allow Black women, femmes, masc-of-centre and non-binary folk to keep creating in the midst of spiritual, emotional, familial, societal and ecological crises. The film is commissioned by the Bard Centre for Human Rights & the Arts in solidarity with Palestine and the forcibly-displaced Palestinian diaspora. Foragers by Jumana Manna depicts the dramas around the practice of foraging for wild edible plants in Palestine/Israel with wry humour and a meditative pace. Foragers captures the joy and knowledge embodied in these traditions alongside their resilience to the prohibitive law. The film raises questions around the politics of extinction, namely who determines what is made extinct and what gets to live on.
